About Written by the Story

Our lives are always being written, and by forces outside of us just as much as by our own decisions and ideals. In fact, I'd argue (and many people smarter than I have argued) that we're never completely the authors of our own lives. Even the "self-made" individualism is a script we're given by cultural forces in the air we breathe.

Most of the decisions we make, and the reasons we make our decisions are scripted -- we're either fulfilling or responding to or reacting to ideas in our world, things we grew up doing or hearing, or things we or others have been taught. As the writer of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament says, "There is nothing new under the sun." Even the "new" gadgets are just a reworking for a new time of what's already been done.

And the ways we respond or react to what we've been taught or grew up with are not just responses from our own imaginations and personal ideals. Our triggers to react, to act differently, to make different decisions are shaped by what's around us. Nothing is personal and private. Even the idea that we have personal and private thoughts or ideas or decisions is a mirage, a product of certain psychological and philosophical thinkers who lived before us. We and our private and personal decisions and thoughts are always a product of what's around us and what made us who we are.

In other words, our lives are always being written. And it's usually not our own personal story that's giving the shape to the story of our lives. We are individuals who are immersed in something bigger than our own lives, always.

But we can at least be aware of this and live to give ourselves over to a particular story, rather than just being at the mercy of the most powerful and influential story in the culture around us.

Why not be written by God's story? I know this sounds a bit cheesy, but hear me.

God's story is always a story that is not normal. God's story is always a story of lifting up the weak, the insignificant, the struggling. God's story is not a story that values "winning," but that sees triumph in losing. God's story frees people from dependence on patterns and systems of the world, to live lives in the fullest sense, free of burden. God's story is not a national one, an ethnic one, or a social one. God's story is about humanity made in God's image. God's story is about forgiveness of the unworthy (that you, and me, and our enemy). It blows all the human categories and lifts the scales from our eyes to truly see what life's about.

This blog is about trying to hear and understand this story, God's story, so that it might be the one that writes our lives. So click around. Hopefully the reflections in this blog will help your life to be shaped and written by God's story.

Let the story be yours.

Resurrection Letter No. 15: God Refuses to Accept Our Evaluation of Things

Dear Good Shepherd and friends, Our daughter Stella likes to make things. She especially likes to make lemonade and orange juice. Fresh lemons or oranges, water, and some sugar. Three ingredients. She's not bad at it, either. The kitchen counter is usually left a sticky mess, but it's a fine trade for fresh OJ or lemonade.  The other day, it was orange juice. We had been given an abundance of oranges, and so she saw an opportunity. In order to get the juice from the oranges, she sometimes uses a hand-held citrus squeezer. It's a helpful gadget that compresses a lemon, lime, or orange, and it has holes to squeeze out the juice, but keep any seeds. Pretty nifty tool, if you ask me.  Well, this kitchen tool sometimes is not big enough for large lemons or most oranges. And if the citrus fruit is too large, it won't squeeze down, and if it won't squeeze down on the orange, then no juice. Or, if you're lucky, you'll get some juice, but not the maximal amount.  S...

Resurrection Letter No. 20: We're all injured and there are no quick fixes

Dear Good Shepherd and friends, So, I've been having knee problems lately. It's been troubling enough that I've begun to see a physical therapist.  The knee problem is the result of several things. I had knee surgery nearly 25 years ago as a sophomore in college. I still continue to run regularly, and have for quite a while. Most recently, I've been crawling around on my knees doing some work in our attic.  The knee problem isn't new. It has to do with things I've done or am doing, just as a matter of course in life, and the trauma of the knee surgery. One does not have knee surgery (or surgery of any sort) and expect that there will never again be issues. The knee is forever in a weakened state. The PT prescribed for me a list of exercises: stability squats, bridges, this "clamshell" exercise I have to do with an exercise band, straight-leg lifts while lying on my back on the floor. None of these are particularly impressive exercises. They take time e...

Resurrection Letter No. 19: When you think of God, think of Jesus and nothing else

Dear Good Shepherd and friends, What comes to your mind when you think of God? Go ahead, ponder it for a second. I'll wait... Ok. Since we can't really talk, I'll guess at what might have come into some of your minds. Maybe some of you might have initially thought, "Hmmm. I don't really think about God much. I have no idea what I think."  Maybe some of you didn't think about God first, but you thought about your church experience. You might have thought of Sunday school images of an old white man, not really grandfather-like, but more like some version of a strong, powerful-looking man in about his 60s with whiteish hair and a long flowing beard.  Or maybe you thought of church but did not have a physical picture that came to mind, but rather ideas. Maybe your church experience put in your minds ideas of a loving God. Or maybe your church experience talked about a loving God, but in reality made God seem like some strict rule-keeping parent who won't j...
